review: across the universe (2007)

By vrtualme | October 27, 2007

First let me direct you to my preview write-up of this film that you can find here.  That’s where you can also see a trailer for the movie.

One of the best movies to be released in years is Across the Universe (2007).  In the style of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), Tommy (1975) and Pink Floyd The Wall (1982), it’s a psychedelic trip without the drugs.  Based on the songs and imagery of the Beatles.  Director Julie Taymor (Frida 2002) does an amazing job transporting us through the turbulent views of the 60’s; giving us front row seats to events that changed our country.  And at no better a time than now, while we fight in another war that most of us don’t understand or agree with.  Starring are Evan Rachel Wood (Golden Globe nominee for Thirteen 2003), Jim Sturgess and Joe Anderson (Becoming Jane 2007); with Dana Fuchs and Martin Luther in their first film performances.  Making special cameo appearances were Bono, Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard and Salma Hayek.  Not only did the entire cast do their own singing, but the songs were recorded right there during shooting.  Here’s the official website, and a musical medley from the movie…
