review: 30 days of night (2007)

By vrtualme | October 27, 2007

First I insist you click here to read the preview I wrote for this movie and see the trailer posted there.

My peaceful fantasies about someday moving to Alaska have been severely crippled with the screening of 30 Days of Night (2007). But that doesn’t stop me from loving this totally kick ass movie by director David Slade (Hard Candy 2005). It’s no surprise that Slade is the same age as me, because this film is very reminiscent of the horror movies from my childhood. John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) quickly jumps to mind. There is no compromising here; these creatures have come to feed. I like that the vampires seem almost like aliens in their observation on humanity, and that we’re never really given any explanation as to their origins. Is that Russian they’re speaking? One thing is for sure, like me, they’d love to get their lips on Josh Hartnett’s long beautiful neck. Though admittedly for different reasons. Ben Foster, who looked so handsome in 3:10 to Yuma (2007), went for the opposite here. Bearing black teeth, dirty clothes and a scruffy face; he’s too pitiful for even the vampires to want. And kudos go out to Danny Huston (Children of Men 2006) who is almost totally unrecognizable as the leader; I’m use to thinking of him as a winey kiss ass. Anyway, here’s the official site and a clip from the movie…

I haven’t seen it yet (shame on me I know) But it looks great and can’t wait to see, right up my alley.
