I’ve pretty much flaked on this project. In fact, any time I feel pressured to do something it’s guaranteed I won’t do it. So promising to write about environmentalism today was a dumb idea, but I’ll acknowledge that I did make this commitment and put my 2 cents forward.
Something I find interesting is that in Arizona recycling isn’t mandatory. Spending most of my life in California it’s drilled into your head that recycling is one of the most important things we can do to save the environment; and it’s actually a crime if you don’t. But in Yuma recycling isn’t even a right, it’s a privilege. It’s virtually impossible to find a recycling center anywhere in town. Now I have a crisis of conscience every time I toss a can in the can, but have little choice in the matter.
One thing that I picked up in California that’s being embraced here is reusable grocery bags. I bought a few on my last trip over for $1 each. Now when I hit my local market I get 5 cents off my bill for each bag I use. Also nice is the fact that they don’t break, and I can stuff quite a bit into just one bag. And their straps are long enough to put over my shoulder, making them so much easier to carry. They’re washable for when they get dirty, and of course it’s great for the environment. I got mine at Albertsons, but here’s the google search with more information and places to order them.

At my last house it cost extra to recycle so I blew it off but I’ve moved about 2 miles away and it’s free to recycle. Go figure.

I can tell you that Montreal is far behing in that field, as I lived a year in B.c. where we had not just one recycling bin, but 2 and 3 or 4 bags for cardboards and papers… Only two garbage bags allowed weekly… if you have more, you have to take them yourself to the special place and pay a fee by the pound…
Here, we have “projects”… nothing lese… and it is very sad… because after my first rebelious reaction toward rincing this and cutting that, it became just an habit and was was easy to fulfill…
