review: resident evil – extinction (2007)

By vrtualme | September 25, 2007

I’ve got a huge girl crush on Milla Jovovich and a slightly smaller crush on Oded Fehr (The Mummy 1999) so seeing them together in Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) definitely earned the movie some brownie points. This third installment in the video game themed trilogy is a little better than the second, but not nearly as good as the first. And while there’s a lot of focus on Las Vegas in the trailers, a very small part of the actual movie takes place there (p.s. the movie on a whole was filmed in Mexico). It’s got all the standard resident evil stuff; zombies, mutants and clones. And from the overall feel there is no doubt this was originally a video game. But in the end I’m a bit disappointed considering this came from director Russell Mulcahy, who also gave us the original Highlander (1986). But I guess two decades of making music documentaries will dull the senses some. here’s the official website.

I saw the movie and pretty muchagree with your review, excluding some minor points.

I haven’t played enough of the ‘Resident Evil’ game series (Called ‘Biohazzard’ in Japan), but my best freind is a diedin the wool, can tell you who was in what game and died how, Resident Evil Fan.

The first movie, and I agree, the best of the series is the one who ironically is the least like the game franchise. Its incredibly talented retelling of both ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and Resident Evil was nothing short of inspired and something that I would not predict to work. I in my ignorant bliss read a movie review by a guy who was also a self proclaimed R.E. fan that pointed out how it was almost an exact translation of the game. When I discussed this with my friend, I practically could not get away untill he had shown me in great detail how wrong the reviewer was.

Since then I have enjoyed Mila’s growth both as an actress and as the character of Alice. In this movie she manages to continue this almost inspite of the movie.

Yo, hollywood… how about giving her a good role where she doesn’t play a mutant/infected/bioengineered Superbabe and maybe lay off the action/combat too, even though she is getting prettygood at it.

I’d like to point out all the cool and good things that save this movie and make it work AND I would like to tell you all the unbelievably big mistakes they made, but you would likely not go see the movie because I would spoil everything for you.

To bottom line it, for people who like this kind of movie, its better than advertised and I think better than half of you think it will be.

i am a big resident evil fan but liked it the least of the three. somehow i didn’t like the desert surroundings. i like it when they are in non desert like cities. thought the evil mutant died too easily too. milla is very good looking — have you seen her lately, she’s 9 months pregnant and is unrecognizable as she has put on so much weight. I think she said she is about 190 pounds or so.
