review: where the truth lies (2005)
By vrtualme | September 14, 2007
Atom Egoyan, who caused quite a bit of controversy with The Sweet Hereafter (1997), is at it again with Where the Truth Lies (2005). Not only for refusing to accept the MPAA rating of NC-17 (it’s considered unrated), but also because of speculation as to what singing/comic duo the story might actually be based on. The novel, by composer Rupert Holmes (”Escape” aka “The Piña Colada Song”), is about the fictional performing team of Lanny & Vince. Played wonderfully by Kevin Bacon (Death Sentence 2007) and Colin Firth (Bridget Jones’s Diary 2001). They are hard boozing, womanizing and famous for their telethons; but the discovery of a dead woman in their hotel suite eventually overshadows everything else in their lives. We come in 15 years later when Karen (Alison Lohman - White Oleander 2002), a young journalist, tries to get to the truth for a book she’s writing. Lines get crossed when everyone is playing games, and it’s hard to know who to trust here. I wasn’t able to access the official website, because the flash 7 player is required. and be warned, the following trailer contains nudity…
