review: halloween (2007)

We’re celebrating Halloween (2007) two months early this year with the release of Rob Zombie’s version of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic. I have to reevaluate my ideas about Mr. Zombie. Here he’s skipped the over-the-top-in-your-face violence we’ve come to expect from him with movies like House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil’s Rejects (2005); and given us a truly unique vision that plays more as a prequel than a copy. I honestly was expecting to hate this movie, but ended up really liking it. The cast is a virtual who’s who of classic horror. Included are Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange 1971), Brad Dourif (the voice of chucky), William Forsythe (“Masters of Horror” - We All Scream for Ice Cream 2007), Udo Kier (BloodRayne 2005), Clint Howard (Rock ‘n’ Roll High School 1979), Danny Trejo (Beat the Devil 2002), Bill Moseley (Army of Darkness 1992), Richard Lynch (The Sword and the Sorcerer 1982 – an old favorite of mine), Leslie Easterbrook (Dismembered 2003 – almost 60 and still looking good), Sybil Danning (Reform School Girls 1986 – also looking hot at 60), Micky Dolenz (of the monkees), Sid Haig (Black Mama, White Mama 1972) and Danielle Harris (who played Jamie Lloyd in three of the sequels). My only argument against this film was that it kinda gives Michael Myers an excuse for his behavior. While the original had no explanation for why the boy snapped, making it all just that much more sinister. But personally, I believe other Halloween fans (like me) won’t be disappointed with this ninth installment of the series. Here’s the official website for this movie; and the official website for the series.
