fall movie previews for october
By vrtualme | August 20, 2007
Someone said the other day that there wasn’t anything good to look forward to this fall. So I decided to put together a fall preview over-view. Basically a list containing some of the movies that looked interesting to me, but everyone should be able to find something they like here.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) – the most interesting and convincing portrayal ever done of queen Elizabeth I was by Cate Blanchett (Oscar winner for The Aviator 2004) in Elizabeth (1998). The film went on to be nominated for seven academy awards; winning for best makeup. Now Blanchett, director Shekhar Kapur, writer Michael Hirst, cinematographer Remi Adefarasin, costume designer Alexandra Byrne and producers Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan have teamed up again for the sequel. All but Kapur were nominated for Oscars for the original so I know we can expect a cinematic treasure yet again. Helping to cement Oscar cold this time around they’ve added Clive Owen (Oscar nominee Closer 2004) to the cast as the tempting object of desire for the “virgin queen”. Official website.
Hitman (2007) – ok, it’s based on a video game, but the poster and trailer have piqued my interests a bit so I’m including it. Apparently fans of the game wanted Jason Statham (The Transporter 2002) to play the part of agent 47; and at one point Vin Diesel (xXx 2002) showed some interests. But in the end French director Xavier Gens must have seen clips from Live Free or Die Hard (2007), because the part eventually went to Timothy Olyphant. Supporting parts went to Dougray Scott (Perfect Creature 2006) and Henry Ian Cusick (“Lost” 26 episodes, 2005-2007). Writing credits go to Skip Woods (Swordfish 2001). Official website.

Sleuth (2007) – director Kenneth Branagh (four time Oscar nominee) decided to do a remake of the 1972 film Sleuth; and just for a kick he cast Michael Caine (two time Oscar winner) as Andrew Wyke. Wyke is a man who invites his wife’s young lover (Jude Law – two time Oscar nominee) over for dinner, with murder on the menu. The catch is that Caine played the young lover in the original movie. Honestly I’m not expecting too much from this film, but then again there isn’t much information available yet. I just like the irony, and the star power connected. Official website.
30 Days of Night (2007) – I already did a write-up on this one. Read it and watch the trailer here.
Martian Child (2007) – the amazing John Cusack (1408 2007) and the adorable Bobby Coleman (Must Love Dogs 2005) team up again in this touching film based on the novel by sci-fi writer David Gerrold. In a nutshell a lonely man adopts a boy who believes he’s a Martian. Obviously they both have major issues to work out, and they do this together. Joan Cusack (two time Oscar nominee), Amanda Peet (“Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” 22 episodes, 2006-2007) and Oliver Platt (Bicentennial Man 1999) are all along for the ride. The first time I saw the trailer I was hooked. I’m guessing that we can expect tears from this one. Official website.

Love John Cusack (I watched Say Anything last night, heh). Didn’t know he had a movie coming up, thanks.
