review: stardust (2007)

By vrtualme | August 19, 2007

Contrary to what some critics would have you believe, Stardust (2007) is a very enjoyable foray into fantasy. Coming from writer/director/producer Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake 2004), showing great promise in what is only his second film. Based on the novel of prose by the same name this is the tale of Tristan (Charlie Cox - Casanova 2005) who journeys after a fallen star (Claire Danes – Golden Globe winner for “My So-Called Life” 1994) to prove his love for a village girl; only to fall in love with the star. This excursion takes him on an unimaginable adventure that includes witches, pirates and royalty. Played by an all star cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer (three time Oscar nominee), Robert De Niro (two time Oscar winner), Peter O’Toole (eight time Oscar nominee), Sienna Miller (Factory Girl 2006), Jason Flemyng (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2003), Rupert Everett (two time Golden Globe nominee) and Ricky Gervais (“Extras” 12 episodes, 2005-2006). If for no other reason I suggest everyone see this just to get a glimpse of De Niro painting a heart on his face and then prance around in a slip and feather boa. If you don’t laugh at that I’d have to say you’ve not a funny bone in your body. The official website is cleverly interactive and offers all kinds of goodies to play with.

I really can’t wait for Stardust to hit the theatres here. I’m a Gaiman fangirl.
