preview: the box (2008)

By vrtualme | August 14, 2007

This preview is coming to you so early that there is virtually no information available yet, but I’m so excited about it that I just had to write it up. Richard Kelly, the write/director of Donnie Darko (2001), has chosen a Richard Matheson short story as his next cinematic production. Matheson may not be a household name to most people, but he’s penned the books that have inspired some really great movies. Those being Stir of Echoes (1999), The Legend of Hell House (1973) which lead to a remake called The Haunting (1999), What Dreams May Come (1998), Somewhere in Time (1980), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) also due for a 2008 remake and the new Will Smith movie I Am Legend (2007) which was previously filmed twice as The Last Man on Earth (1964) with Vincent Price and The Omega Man (1971) with Charlton Heston. He’s also written the scripts to some classic episodes for “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” (2 episodes, 1962-1963), “The Twilight Zone” (16 episodes, 1959-1964), “Night Gallery” (2 episodes, 1971-1972), “Ghost Story” (7 episodes, 1972), “Amazing Stories” (3 episodes, 1986-1987), “The Outer Limits” (1 episode, 1996) and the only “Masters of Horror” episode that I liked Dance of the Dead (2005). This time around it’s a story called The Box (2008) about a couple who find a box on their doorstep that promises great fortune if they press the button inside. The catch being that “someone they don’t know will die.” This doesn’t sound too bad, but when the box is later collected they are told that it will go to “someone they don’t know.” Wink wink. If this story sounds strangely familiar to you, like it did to me, that’s because it was done as a segment called Button, Button back in 1986 on the new (at the time) “The Twilight Zone” series. Out of the color episodes it’s the only one that was so creepy that it stuck with me after all these years; and that’s why I’m so excited that it’s being made into a movie. So far the only actor signed to the cast is Cameron Diaz (There’s Something About Mary 1998), in what I think might be her first horror movie. as more information becomes available I’ll be sure to update everyone.
