review: 1408 (2007)

By vrtualme | July 9, 2007

I’m finally getting around to writing my review of the latest movie based on a Stephan King story, 1408 (2007). My lateness should not reflect on the quality of this film. It opened in wide release on June 22nd, and I was right there that first day to view it. It’s just that I saw four other movies in theaters that same day, not to mention all the others I view on a regular bases. And let’s face it, I’m lazy. Anyway, the screenplay adapted by Scott Alexander (golden globe winner for The People vs. Larry Flynt 1996) and Matt Greenberg (Reign of Fire 2002 & Halloween H20: 20 Years Later 1998) was superbly brought to the big screen by director Mikael Håfström (Derailed 2005). Proving once again that to be truly menacing one does not need gore (though I did read that screen shots of blood were edited in by frame before certain scenes, so screw that theory). what I do know is that I was on the edge of my seat for the entire 94 minute run time, to the point that my muscles were cramping by the time I left the theater. Also our costars, John Cusack (golden globe nominee for High Fidelity 2000) and Samuel L. Jackson (Oscar nominee for Pulp Fiction 1994), give their usual ass-kicking performances that have you believing every word from their mouths. But that’s just what we’ve come to expect from these bad boys. What was a nice surprise was the great job done by 10 year old Jasmine Jessica Anthony (winner of the best young artist award for her role in “Commander in Chief” 2005). As for the official website its almost as creepy as the movie itself, so check it out.

I thought 1408 was a good fright film… i wasnt familiar with the Stephen King story, but the movie was pretty good. I’m still at odds with the ending, but all in all it gave me chills in the good kind of way…

BTW - i’m a fan of your blog. Keep up the good work!
