review: ocean’s thirteen (2007)

By vrtualme | July 4, 2007

Steven Soderbergh (Oscar winner for Traffic 2000) got the old gang together again for Ocean’s Thirteen (2007); only this time they’re up against Al Pacino (Oscar winner for Scent of a Woman 1992) and Ellen Barkin (Emmy winner for Before Women Had Wings 1997). Noticeably missing from the cast is Julia Roberts (Oscar winner for Erin Brockovich 2000), who reportedly wanted to spend more time with her new children. Instead we get appearances from Eddie Izzard (emmy winner for Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill 1999), Jerry Weintraub (producer of the ocean trilogy), Steven Lambert (stunt man for the previous two ocean movies), Julian Sands (Leaving Las Vegas 1995 & Boxing Helena 1993), David Paymer (Oscar nominee for Mr. Saturday Night 1992), Bob Einstein (aka Super Dave Osborne and two time emmy winner for “Van Dyke and Company” 1976 & “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” 1967) and Oprah Winfrey. As Ocean’s Eleven (2001) was a tribute to the original and the rat pack, with a through back style of the late 50’s. This installment reminded me of the psychedelic drug culture of the late 60’s, especially in the opening credits which felt a bit like an acid flashback. Overall, I’d have to say that 13 lived up to the standards of 11 with lots of inside jokes that you can read about on imdb’s trivia page. Feel free to skip Ocean’s Twelve (2004); the only good scene being when Julia’s character impersonates her. Now here’s the official website and the trailer…
