review: a mighty heart (2007)

By vrtualme | July 4, 2007

From director Michael Winterbottom (The Road to Guantanamo 2006) comes another sad story of the horrors connected to the “war on terrorism.” A Mighty Heart (2007), based on the book of the same name, is the true personal account of Mariane Pearl (portrayed beautifully by Angelina Jolie Oscar winner for Girl, Interrupted 1999) about the death of her husband. Dan Futterman (Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nominee for Capote 2005) plays Daniel Pearl, the writer for the wall street journal who was kidnapped and later murdered in Karachi, Pakistan while investigating the story of Richard Reid (aka “the shoe bomber”). This case is most memorable because of the video footage released to CNN of Pearl’s decapitation. The movie itself is very well made and I highly recommend it. Though, personally, I was confused about the politics. What’s nice about the official website is that it gives a detailed step by step telling of all the events, that even I could understand. Also on that website are articles written by Pearl and the touching memorial given by his father (it almost brought me to tears). This is the best copy of the trailer that I could find…
