preview: perfect creature (2006)

By vrtualme | June 28, 2007

The next vampire movie I want to focus on is a contribution from New Zealand; marking the largest deal ever made between their country and an American studio. Perfect Creature (2006) will be getting its North American premiere July 5th at the Fantasia Film Festival. Though it was completed over two years ago, and already screened in the Netherlands last year, there is still no word yet on its general release date. And sadly it looks like it might be going straight to DVD. This story, from writer/director Glenn Standring, about vampires and humans living in peace and fighting a shared enemy resembles that of The Breed (2001). But even though that was a pretty good film in its own right, it’s gotten very little notice over the years. So I don’t believe others will be making the same connection. Perfect Creatures is supposedly set in an alternate futuristic version of a 1960’s New Zealand called Nuovo Zelandia. Ok, I know that sounds funny, but it’s a unique twist that seems to work here. like it’s writer/director, most of the cast seem to be relative newcomers with the exception of Dougray Scott (“Desperate Housewives” 19 episodes, 2006-2007), Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea 1999) and Stuart Wilson (The Mask of Zorro 1998). And now the trailer…
