review: tideland (2005)

By vrtualme | April 19, 2007

I’ve never been a big fan of Terry Gilliam (Brazil 1985), and watching Tideland (2005) hasn’t helped. Like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), we have a young girl who escapes from the nightmares of reality into her imagination. But unlike Pan’s Labyrinth with its grand fantasies, we’re really only given mostly two hours of a child talking to herself. This movie has its moments, but for the most part it was loooooong and booooooring. And while I have high hopes for Gilliam’s imagination; he always seems to take sick and twisted just a little too far. And not in a good way.

I liked this one more than I thought I would. I thought the actor who played Dickens did an awesome job. Did you see the version with the intro by Terry G?

i almost mentioned the actor who played dickens in my review. he did do an outstanding job. probably the best actor of the lot.

but no, there was no intro by terry gilliam. i guess all the scenes where the little girl is curled-up with the dead body of her father were just a bit much for me.
