another double day of tragedy

By vrtualme | March 7, 2007

March 7th marks the end of two Hollywood legends; Stanley Kubrick (1999) and Divine (1988).

Stanley Kubrick started his career making documentaries, but later went on to become one of America’s most acclaimed directors. In the last 40 years of his life Kubrick only made nine feature films, but five of them earned him academy award nominations. Those being Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975) and Full Metal Jacket (1987). And even though the other four didn’t get him nominated, they are still considered cinema classics. They are Spartacus (1960), Lolita (1962), The Shining (1980) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). In my opinion Kubrick’s movies always felt like we were sneaking a peek at someone’s life through the peephole of their door; like there was much more going on around the corner that we couldn’t see.

Harris Glenn Milstead, aka Divine, was best known for his roles in such John Waters’ films as Female Trouble (1974), Polyester (1981) and Hairspray (1988). And though most of his roles required him to wear dresses Divine hated being called a drag queen or transvestite; he has been quoted as saying “I’m just a guy playing women’s roles.” I may not have always liked the movies he was in, but I’ve always liked him.
