a double day of tragedy

By vrtualme | March 5, 2007

Today marks the anniversary of the deaths of two favorites of mine: patsy cline and john belushi.

Patsy cline is best known for being a country singer though several of her songs also made it to the top of the pop charts too. She was a strong woman who survived a near fatal car crash in 1961, but was unable to escape the plane crash that took her life in 1963. In 1985 Jessica Lange earned an academy award nomination for portraying her in the movie sweet dreams, named after one of her hit songs. I hold patsy close to my heart, because every time I get drunk I can’t resist singing her songs. 30 was too young an age to die; but even so in that short time she made a major impact on the lives of so many.

John belushi is probably best known for his mostly non-speaking part in National Lampoon’s animal house (1978) and for being half of the blues brothers (1980) duo. He was also part of the original cast of Saturday night live (1975-1979). In one episode of snl he played an old man who was the last surviving member of the original cast, when in reality he ended up being the first to die. That death came as the result of a drug overdose in a room at the Chateau Marmont on the sunset strip in 1982. Today john’s younger brother, James belushi, continues to entertain us; but we will always miss ‘Joliet’ Jake Blues.
